Responsibilities

Support physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and/or nurses by taking vitals, assisting in medical examinations and other specific procedures. Act as lead and delegate duties to lower level staff.

 

Lead Responsibilities

  • Report any equipment failures to Clinic Manager
  • Present positive role model and clinic image
  • Responsible for provider room assignment, exam room stocking and setup
  • Complete monthly log and monitor supplies and expiration dates of equipment and supplies for each room; order and maintain supplies
  • Assist with coverage for leaves, vacations, sick days, etc.
  • Assist management with oversight of patient flow and back office
  • Ensure control and temperature logs are done daily
  • Verify all patient rooms are fully stocked
  • Ensure all Medical Assistants are working efficiently
  • Report any Medical Assistant training needs to Clinic Manager
  • Assist with training of new medical assistants
  • Act as a resource to other medical assistants as needed
  • Assist Clinic Manager with testing, maintaining and updating medical assistant skills

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Print and review schedule daily in preparation for the day
  • Prepare patients for examination and assist providers with the examination and/or procedure
  • Take vital signs, height and weight of patients; plot growth charts; record immunizations
  • Apply and remove bandages and dressings, orthopedic appliances such as knee immobilizers, envelope slings, orthotics and similar devices and assist providers in cast, splint and orthopedic appliance applications.
  • Select and adjust crutches and provide patient instruction on proper use
  • Perform simple laboratory and screening tests customarily performed in a medical office such as visual acuity, audiometric screening, Snellen tests, spirometry tests and EKG’s
  • Set up appropriate instrument trays for special procedures
  • Verify the purpose of the visit
  • Set up rooms for provider use in accordance with patient's needs
  • Give counseling, care and follow-up instructions, health education and materials to patients as instructed by provider
  • Provide confidential, culturally sensitive and appropriate language translation for provider and patient
  • Administer intramuscular, subcutaneous and intra-dermal injections, perform skin tests and venipuncture for purposes of withdrawing blood under the direct supervision of the provider
  • Wash, wrap and autoclave instruments according to guidelines
  • Prepare disposable and infectious waste for appropriate disposal
  • Maintain electronic patient records and charges to ensure completeness and accuracy of information
  • Complete appropriate electronic forms as required for the patient’s medical treatment, including radiology and laboratory slips and referrals based on provider findings
  • Assist in minor surgery and other specialty surgical and medical procedures only under the direct supervision of the provider

Qualifications

Minimum

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Bilingual English/Spanish
  • Clinical Medical Assistant Certification indicating completion of program from an approved school or hospital
  • Minimum four years’ back office experience
  • CPR Certification (BLS Child, Infant, Adult)
  • Phlebotomy certification

Required Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Knowledge of and ability to perform the full range of professional medical assistant duties
  • Experience/familiarity with Practice Management and Electronic Medical Records systems, NextGen preferred
  • Knowledge of community health centers, public assistance programs, state and federal regulations and managed care systems
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative and be proactive
  • Excellent knowledge of general back office procedures, such as taking vitals, performing venipuncture, administering immunizations, etc
  • Excellent organizational, time management and interpersonal skills
  • Comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology in English and Spanish
  • Emergency response capability for possible crisis situations
  • Excellent verbal and written skills necessary for communication with patients/clients, providers and other staff
  • Ability to interface with all levels of personnel in a professional manner
  • Ability to work with people of all social and ethnic backgrounds and within the constraints of government funded programs

Pay Range:

  • $23.50 - $27.00 DOE
